Manuka Honey Can Fight Superbug
Super germs or bacteria (superbugs) that is very resistant to antibiotics increasingly rampant in some countries. Scientists find way to conquer it with Manuka honey, honey from bees foraging in New Zealand Manuka tree.
Super germ has become a new threat because until now no drug that can fight it. Superbug is suspected to arise as a result of excessive antibiotics and uncontrolled in the medical world today.
Because there is no medicine that can fight it, if people exposed to these superbugs then his life could be threatened.
Scientists reveal that manuka honey can be used to fight infections that are resistant to the most powerful antibiotics (superbugs).
Experiments in the laboratory showed manuka honey can break down the defense of those bacteria so that can be useful for treating malignant superbugs such as MRSA infection. The results of this study were presented at the meeting of the Society for General Microbiology.
Professor Ross Cooper of the University of Wales Institute Cardiff find variations of honey bees foraging in New Zealand’s manuka tree that is named manuka honey. This honey has proven effective against bacterial infections.
Manuka honey has been used to treat wounds in all over the world with to filter and remove impurities contained therein. For centuries people have known antiseptic power of honey.
Professor Cooper’s study, use 3 kinds of bacteria that are resistant to various antibiotics namely Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Group A streptococci and Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It was found that manuka honey can inhibit the entry of bacteria into the tissues which is an important step in the initiation of acute infections.
If the manuka honey can prevent the entry of bacteria into the network then this will hinder the formation of biofilms, which is a layer that can protect bacteria from antibiotics and allow a continuous infection.
“But people should not try at home first by buying honey at the supermarket, because in this study honey that used is medical grade and not purchased in the shops,” he said.
